Sanctuary & Research

Te Arai North Ecological Sanctuary & Research Hub
We’re creating a ‘living laboratory’ where science, education, and conservation efforts converge.
Te Arai North Ecological Sanctuary plans to protect and enhance the sites indigenous flora, fauna and ecosystems in a manner which encourages and allows for the recolonisation and reintroduction of species that have been lost to the area. This involves;
Looking after what we have now;
We have many threatened species we are actively working to protect, including the NZ fairy tern, Australasian bittern, shore skink and mudfish.Attracting wildlife to recolonise the area;
By creating favourable habitat we are working on attracting back species that have been lost over time.Monitoring and research;
Evaluate the success of management techniques by tracking ecosystem recovery.
The Te Arai North Ecological Sanctuary aims to achieve nationally significant conservation gains within a multi-use landscape, while promoting education and advocacy on conserving our indigenous species.

Work with partners to enhance Tara iti habitat including shell patch enhancement at breeding sites and landscape-scale predator control.
Support the groundbreaking Tara Iti captive rearing program.
Support and fund management actions; including nest cameras, satellite trackers, bird hides, providing accomodation for DOC rangers and zoo staff, and developing structured decision making and Advocacy plans.
